What is the 14th Baktun?

A baktun (b'ak'tun) - a term invented by scholars of Mayan culture - is 20 katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar. It contains 144,000 days, equivalent to 394.25 tropical years. The current (13th) baktun will be completed on the day of the austral solstice on (December 21, 2012 using the GMT correlation). This also marks the beginning of the 14th baktun.

The Mayan calendar system places its 'zero' day in 3114 BCE and repeats after 5125 years - in 2012. The completion of 13 Baktuns marks the Creation of the world of human beings according to the Maya. These cycles of creation and destruction can be thought of as stages, or harmonics, of evolution.

According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts, we are living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. In the Maya Long Count, the previous creation ended at the start of a 14th b'ak'tun. Thus, 2012 begins the fifth world.

Many people have the idea that 2012 somehow represents "the end of the world" - that some cataclysm or act of God is going to end life on planet Earth. There really is no rational reason for this belief. The Mayan calendar does not "end" - it simply repeats cycles - just like the cycles of the seasons. I am certain that the 2012 hysteria is primarily a mask for what is really going on. It is obvious to many that it's our way of life that's coming to an end, the end of an epoch in human history - and the beginning of a new epoch.

Looking at our global civilization as a system - our system of monetarism (rule by monetary policy), consumerism (production and consumption), and corruption of thought (via money, education and media) - is unsustainable and does not serve humanity or our planet. It's dysfunctional because it's fundamentally flawed in its design. We have to become conscious of the fact that our planet suffers from bad management. These managers, or rulers are desperately trying to maintain their power - but they will fail.

Therefore many of the articles posted here will not be limited to Mayanism, but the symptoms and signs of what it is that's coming to an end - what's gone wrong. Seeing clearly the existing pathology of our civilization necessarily illuminates how we got into this predicament, and hopefully, what we must do to get out of it.

Many of these 'symptoms' are corruption at the highest levels of the power structure (referred to as "conspiracy theories" by the spokesmen of the owners - their politicians and their media) and much of their crimes are enabled by use of indoctrination and psychological conditioning (mind control). Much effort is expended maintaining the illusion of freedom, but in fact, we live under tyranny, but refuse to face it. This mass-delusion is pathological and self-destructive. It is inevitable that it will come to an end. Like a cancer, it is collapsing as a result of its own malfunction.

We cannot sit back and blame the rulers for our condition though - we have done all the work for them. We need to take responsibility for this bad management and start being good stewards of the earth and of our lives. We cannot delegate that to criminals and corporations.
